Masterclass and Other Sample File Formats March 3, 2017, 10:14 a.m.
My understanding was that my license of Indie would allow me to open other version files, but that there would be limitations to which versions could open which files.
I am finding that when I load project files from the Masterclass - such as the project files for the changed Oceans, I get a lot of error on opening - - usually “Skipping unrecognized parameter” errors, and often black screens or odd behavior.
Are the tutorials not set up for Indie folks? I know that my Digital Tutors sub had issues because you couldn't open ‘real’ Houdini files in APPRENTICE, but I would hate to find out that I can't utilize training resources with Indie.
EDIT: Another example - -for the file ocean_waves_baked, I get the unrecognized parameter errors, but it loads and SEEMS to work, but then if I attempt to render I get an error about being unable to load two textures.
Thanks,

First Work with Houdini Indie - License Downgraded? Jan. 13, 2017, 7:07 a.m.
This morning I was working through viewport navigation, and to give me something to navigate around I created a sphere and ground plane, caused the sphere to emit fluid onto that ground plane, and all worked well in terms of emission and spread…I then rendered region a couple of times, and Indie gave me a popup window indicating that my “License has been downgraded” and telling me to restart.
Since I only licensed yesterday, is this just a teething problem? Is there something I need to do to keep this from happening?
I've had some very annoying experiences with some licensing schemes (life sometimes seems easier for the pirates!) so I want to make sure this isn't something that's going to hit me every X days or something.
EDIT: It looks like I have TWO applications on my machine - Indie and FX with the same version number…could I have picked the wrong one? If so, would it run for a while THEN downgrade? Sorry for all the questions, but one more: Can I UNINSTALL the FX version, or is that tied to my Indie license?
Thanks,
JT

Glad I looked around first - I have the same question, and also another that I might try to sneak in if there's no huge penalty for ‘drifting’ a thread.
There is a 1920x1080 limit in Indie…there is also an ENGINE (perhaps available separately, or is it a part of Indie) that allows movement of data into a package like Max or Maya. A two-part question:
a) Is there a way - legally and ethically! - to take an Indie file and render it at higher resolution in another package? Meaning is the resolution limit solely with respect to Mantra?
b) I am nowhere near the income limit for Indie, but my DREAM would be to produce something that VERYBIGCompany would want to buy/distribute. Imagine that happens but they want 2k or 4k resolution……I am 99% sure that Houdini will NOT read Indie files…..does this mean that if I'm offered big bucks I'd have to RECREATE all of the files in a full license of Houdini, or is there some way that we might work with sidefx to have the files converted? I know…low likelihood of happening, but if I DO want to eventually take off, I'd like to know there might be SOME option to get higher resolution without starting over.
Thanks,
JT
