Yes, that would work aswell just to transform the mapping coordinates. But this asset allows easier control - the mapping is created exactly like the box you see. This is mostly helpfull for architectural texturing, where you usually have exact phisical scale of the texture. For example if you have a brick texture and you know that the square of the texture is 1x1 meter in real life, than you can just plug in a box 1x1 and the scaling is accurate.Also the built in mapping options don't allow you to match the corner offset of the texture, so that on the edges the bricks line up on all sides.
