These days if you're a 3d artist, it's hard to claim ignorance about Houdini! That said, it all looks very strange from the outside, and if you're a professional 3d artist, it can seem a bit daunting to leave what you know and try something that seems so different.
Here I've written a long guide as to why you might want to leave your existing app, and the advantages Houdini offers over the competition. I try to be as honest as I can, and update whenever I can as Sidefx release new features, but it's largely written from when I stopped using Maya full-time in 2014, so most of my opinions pre-date things like Bifrost and the more recent Maya changes. From what I hear though, most of the article is still valid.
