GUARD TOWER 1 | GROUND PART 1 | CREATING THE GROUND ASSET
To get the Guard Tower scene started, you will begin with the Ground Digital Asset. In this lecture we will discuss the inner workings of a Digital Asset and introduce you to creating them with Houdini. Once created we are going to import it into Unity 3D using the Houdini Engine plug-in!

I don`t have this "HDA" folder in my Unity project
VoxlartStudio 6 years, 3 months ago |
you can create it in the project folder of Unity, it's a matter of orgnization, you can even drag and drop in other folder but for more orgnized project Kenny create this folder.

Howdy! Thanks for your questions! This is Kenny. The Houdini Engine wont create the HDA folder for ya, so you'll have to make the folder in Unity using the right click menu. You can keep your HDA's where you'd like I was simply showing what I do when working with the Houdini Engine and Unity.
With regards to not being able to drag the HDA into the Hierarchy, do you have the Houdini engine Installed into Unity? Let me know! I am here to help!
Thanks!

Spend way to much time trying to convert my .hdanc to .hda. I will continue the tutorial just for the Houdini parts then.

hello i do not have Asset Parameters in my Unity? any help?
Indie-Pixel 6 years, 3 months ago |
Howdy Selimagovic! Hmmmm, Im wondering if you can post your hda or hip file for me so I can try to help out. I created a public folder here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jc358ny0ztvqkbv/AAAHVlvPG9d94qmwhPe36Kova?dl=0 so we can share files. Let me know if this works or not.

I cannot send asset on Dropbox, and my Houdini is non-commercial, do I have to buy Houdini engine indie?
Indie-Pixel 6 years, 3 months ago |
Ah. Yeah unfortunately in order to bring in the HDA into Unity, a license of Houdini Engine is required, and the best way to do that is to buy a license of Houdini Indie. My apologies, there isn't anything I can do about it as I do not work for Side Effects Software, I help them make tutorials for Houdini and Houdini Engine. Cool thing though is you can still use Apprentice to set up the level in the Houdini Editor and export out the geometry and import them into Unity. I know...not as cool. My apologies.

Hi Kenny, just wondering how I go about setting "up the level in the Houdini Editor and export out the geometry and import them into Unity". I've actually got a Unity Project called Guard Tower Tutorial started but I'm not sure how to do the initial set up in Unity. I tried to find a IP_Framework.unitypackage file to install as a Custom Package in Unity but I can't find one in the zip folders supplied with this course. I found the IndiePixel_Framework folder, but it doesn't have a .unitypackage file in it I can find. What if I copy all the contents of the zip download directly into the matching folders set up in the Unity Project folders? E.g. copy the contents of the Guard_Tower/Assets folder into the Unity Guard_Tower_Tutorial/Assets folder & so on. Or would this create a dog's breakfast in Unity...lol? It would be good to be able to set this up so I can fly my R22 into battle;-) I've already built all the HDA's in Houdini ready to use in Unity. Well done on another awesome tutorial series too. Legend.

Update on the Guard Tower - Unity situation. I've installed Unity Hub, & I just updated to Unity 2019.1.0f2. I had already installed the Indie-Pixel Framework in my Guard Tower file but noticed the Indie-Pixel Menu Tab at the top had disappeared. So I deleted it & re-imported as a Custom Package but the Indie-Pixel Menu doesn't appear anymore with this version. Hmmm, maybe your Framework needs updating Kenny? I might have to revert back to older version of Unity for it to work. I'm a bit worried what will happen if I update my IP_Helicopter_Unity project & whether it will cause issues. Might pay to keep it as an older version for now anyway.
I also installed HoudiniEngineUnity Plugin in Unity so now I should be able to import HDA's etc from Houdini, although I haven't tried yet & not sure how this works or if it actually will with Houdini Apprentice license. Pretty tricky finding decent help out their specific to Houdini Apprentice & Unity users.
I have noticed that Unity seems to update very regularly, which is why they probably released Unity Hub, to help manage so many versions etc.
I have one other issue I'd like to sort out in Unity. When I open Unity Hub, & select the file & click on Advanced Open, I have the option of a "Current Build Target" or a "Windows" option. I'm not sure what this means, whether it relates to the file locations for either the Project or for Unity overall? Just wondering what option I should choose. I've been selecting "Current Build Target" so far. Any help much appreciated.

Spent a good while trying to figure out why I had a .hdanc instead of a hda, and having problems dragging into the unity game scene. Turns out its because I was using the apprentice version. hdaNC stands for Non-Commercial and won't work with Unity. Wish that would have known that before starting this tutorial.

Wow. I could not get any asset to show up in Unity in any color except solid black. Hours later, I created a new scene and the asset light up perfectly. Default layer in previous scene had no lights! LOL!
Great tutorials BTW!

I am Glad I read these comments, and didn't repeat the mistake I made trying to export a height map at High resolution for 2 hours only to realise it was a problem with non commercial edition
