RIGGING SERIES 2 | CAPTURING GEOMETRY
Michael Goldfarb presents the second series of rigging in Houdini. Topics covered include updates on our previous character asset created in the first series; we will also look at how to capture geometry in general, look at bones and capture parameters, capture and deform regions, capture pose vs capture frame, aligning capture pose, capture types and finally, how to fix problem areas in our captured regions (using Edit Capture Regions, Edit Capture Weights, Paint Capture Layer, Capture Correct). To wrap this all together, we will apply everything we have covered so far onto the soldier character (he will get some bones and animation), and look at how we can correct problem areas, as well as quickly rig overlaying garment using the weights captured from the soldier body mesh, without too much extra cost.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and helping us in the Rigging side of houdini. Houdini rigging system is kind of easy and complex, but your rigging series helped us a lot to do rigging in Houdini from Don't know where to start to expert. I have done some character rigs for my stylized character and i want to do some facial rigging in Houdini. But I don't know where to start. I even tried to explore the auto rigs to get some idea but i get too confused. I thought of using blend Shapes, but it is only good for eyes and a major drop back is we have to pre-define the expressions . For lips and eyes brows i think bone based rigging will help in portray some unique facial expression . I hope you see this post and help me & other Artists who want to do facial rigging in Houdini. I don't want to do any kind of character works in other packages . So please a facial rigging tips will help a lot.....

Hi,
thanks, I'm glad the Series have been helpful.
Facial rigging is something I'd like to do more tutorials for in the future, for now you might have a look at the videos done by Rok Andic
https://vimeo.com/rokandic
there is some good stuff there.
thanks again

Thanks for taking your time and replied to me. I have looked his tutorials and he is using blendshape facial rigging. Which is perfect for most character's. And his tutorials on corrective shapes, mirroring Blend Shapes helped me a lot in understanding blend Shape Workflow. Even so i like to learn bone based facial rigging Workflow, just for lips and eyebrows or full face.
Im glad to hear that you planing on doing a facial rigging tutorial in future. I hope it will come soon. I know the duration between rigging series 1 & 2. But the wait is worth. So all i can do is wait for your tutorials.
And can u cover small part on Pose shape deformation toolkits. I learned that but u can teach something i didn't know.
Thanks

I hope everyone sceen the Open spring movie from blender animation. They have given the character for free in the Blender cloud. I tried to mimic the facial rigging Workflow from blender. But i need some help. Im attaching the link for the spring scene file. It has the spring girl character and her dog.

Great job. Thanks a lot. Probably the most well spoken and concise tutorial for any 3d software I have ever had the pleasure to experience. Well planned, great audio, and much deeper than the average tutorial, without getting convoluted as some of the Master Classes can get. Cheers!

btw, up to the previous video there is no gdisplay call back script being used.

Should a beginner with learning rigging in Houdini start with first intro that uses Houdini ver.16.5 or start with the last one with the updated version?
goldfarb 4 years ago |
you can use H18.5 (the latest), very little has changed.
and while KineFX introduces a whole new way of rigging to Houdini, the object based methods are still useful.
