1 | Introduction

Welcome to Introduction to PDG for Indie Game Developers.  In this tutorial series we are going to walk through the entire process of using Side FX’s latest addition to Houdini, TOP’s and PDG!  This technology allows us to build large scale environments much faster than before and the best thing is we can do it all inside of the Houdini Engine for Unity.

2 | Project Overview

Before we dive into the details of the course let’s take a quick look at what we are going to build throughout this course.  You will learn how to set up a basic TOP network, how to begin to build a Procedural Level Creation system, and how to scatter massive amount of foliage onto your levels.  We will even take a look at how to produce Areas and Roads for our level.  By the end of this course you will have the beginning of a complete Procedural Level creation system and the foundational knowledge needed to become successful with PDG, TOP’s, and the Houdini Engine for Unity!

    Hello, thanks for the tutorial.
Will I be able use UE4 instead of Unity, or are there any tech\software limitations in PDG that wouldn't allow me to use UE4 for this tutorial project?

    Thanks

You can use TOPs inside of Unreal, but the PDG Asset Link is currently for Unity right now. You can most certainly use PDG in Unreal, but you need to create a TOP network at the SOP level, not the OBJ level. So create a Geometry node at the OBJ level, and place a TOP network inside of that. Then inside of the TOP SOP, you can begin to develop your TOP network. This will also make it so the geometry loads into your Unreal Level. Hopefully that helps! I will do my best to get some PDG Unreal training out as soon as I can! Thanks again! :-)

      Hi,

I'm trying this with UE4 but I'm stuck at building the top inside the geo. What goes in the geo input? All I get in ue4 is the houdini logo.

    Thanks for the course.
I am UE4 user as well so looking forward :)

    I have another question.
How "Railway Empire" (PC game) achieved in-game terrain deform and tunnel/bridge construction? All ideas welcome.

No. You need an Indie or Commercial License. Houdini Apprentice won't cut it unfortunately.
