The problem with hairs snapping to the origin has been addressed in 16.0.562

Houdini 16.0.562
Fixed a bug in Guide Process SOP's Set Length operation which could cause the tips of curves to snap to the origin. Tue. March 28, 2017

Can you confirm this fixed it for you?

I wasn't able to reproduce your crash before but I'll give that another shot if you're still getting this.

I haven't checked yet, but i sure trust you guys did a good job and fixed that origin weirdness.

The crash i just had was just hair on a pighead, then added a set length node to the hairgen, checked randomize, and keyframed the nim and max length. Then scrolling the timeline back and forth made Houdini 16.0.577 crash.

Cheers.
