Hi, Im new to USD and houdini,

I'm testing the component builder and I'm now wondering what would be the best way to bring in an alembic file and setup the kind similar to how I can do it using the Geo workflow and using sop import into Solaris, where I can in the primitive definition set kind authoring to Nested assembly, groups and components. Is there something similar using the component builder?

Hi,

you can use the configure primitive node in lops to set the kind of a primitive.

Ok, so I tested that earlier but did not understand how I could match the same structure for all groups and sub-components like I get when importing an alembic into a geo container and sop importing into lops, where when I check the Kind authoring choosing Nested assembly, groups and components option all groups and components are set up in one go.

Component Builder is setup to make a single component with a payload, not nested assemblies, groups, and components. If you wanted that entire Alembic file to be a component asset, try putting your Alembic SOP inside of the Component Geometry LOP and unpack it, and see if that gives you what you're after?
