Houdini 20.5 Nodes Copernicus nodes

Glow Copernicus node

Adds glow to an image based on its luminance.

On this page

This node adds a glow effect to the input layer, which is usually an image. The node identifies high luminance areas (bright regions) in the layer and applies the glow effect to those areas. This node helps add realism to your layer.

For example, use this node to create neon lighting and explosions.

Note

The Blur COPs in the Glow node’s subnetwork add blurring and hazing to make the glow effect unfocused and fuzzy. Use the Units, Size, Filter, and Aspect parameters in the Glow node to control this blur radius.

Parameters

Signature

The layer type that the source accepts.

See Signatures for more information.

Mask

The amount of the new value to mix in with the original value. Higher values mix in more of the new value. Lower values mix in less of the new value. A value of 1 means this node uses only the new value.

The default value is 1. See Mask for more information.

Output Glow Only

Outputs only the glow effect, which displays a preview of the effect. Turn this on if you want to make the glow a separate AOV or configure the glow further before you composite it on top of the source layer.

For example, turn this parameter on and wire the node into the fg input of the Add node. Wire the source into the bg input of the Add node.

Glow

Glow Threshold

Any pixel with a luminance value above this threshold has the glow effect. This lets you apply glow to only high luminance parts of your source layer.

The default value is 0.75.

Brightness

The amount of brightness to apply to the glow effect. Higher values increase the brightness to lighten and expand the glow effect. Lower values decrease the brightness to dim and shrink the glow effect.

The default value is 2.

Saturation

The amount of saturation to apply to the glow effect. Higher values increase the saturation to make the hue of the glow effect more intense. Lower values decrease the saturation to make the hue of the glow effect less intense, which results in an absence of hue (grayscale). High luminance parts of a layer are often desaturated.

The default value is 1.

Tint

The tint (color) to apply to the glow effect.

The default value is 1, 1, 1.

Units

The unit of measurement that the Blur COPs in the node’s subnetwork use to determine the size of the glow effect’s radius.

Image (default)

Use image space to configure the size of the glow effect’s radius.

Pixels

Use pixels to configure the size of the glow effect’s radius.

Size

The size of the glow effect’s radius in image space or pixels, which the Units parameter determines. Higher values expand the circumference of the radius to enhance the smooth blur of the glow effect. Lower values contract the circumference of the radius to remove blurring and sharpen the glow effect.

When Units is Image, the default value is 0.05. When Units is Pixels, the default value is 3.

Filter

The filter that the Blur COPs in the node’s subnetwork use.

Gaussian (default)

Box

Scale Size

Anistropic scaling of the size of the glow effect.

Inputs

source

The original layer to which you apply the glow effect.

mask

An optional per-pixel mask amount that’s scaled by the Mask parameter.

Outputs

glow

The source layer with the glow effect added. If Output Glow Only is on, this instead outputs only the glow effect.
